The NIIT, the Indian software giant which designed the infrastructural system of online CAT, is now being criticized by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) for the technical faults in Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009. However, the blame was initially put upon the U.S.-firm Prometric, which designed the module for the online CAT.
After studying the various details submitted by Prometric, the Chairmen revealed that the technical faults occurred due to the problems in the local area network (LAN) which was was under the NIIT's responsibility. Furthermore, IIMs had cleared Prometric to give it clean chit to carry on conducting the test. According to an official, if the directors agree with the suggestions of the admission chairmen, the CAT will be conducted by Prometric while the other regulating partner, NIIT, may not be looked for contract further.
The Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009 was conducted in two stages. After the first stage, the problem was generated due to the virus attack, according to the presentation put by the firm to the IIMs. It was a major setback to the IIMs. As a result, the IIM directors will discuss in a meeting, which is scheduled in April 2010, the recommendations made by the admission chairmen. The major point of discussion will be to decide the final conductor of CAT exam this year.

The opening up of Indian higher education to foreign competition by allowing foreign universities to start campuses in India has the potential to have the same impact as the post-1991 opening up had on the overall economy. A final assessment of the move has to await the enactment of the legislation and the shape it eventually takes. The best case scenario is global best practices coming in and forcing Indian higher education to reform in the face of competition. The worst case scenario is second-class institutions coming in and that too only in areas with good revenue potential, taking away some of the good teachers from leading national institutions and eventually having little impact on the overall scene in terms of quality or quantity (seats). Some of the leading institutions in the world have indicated that they are in no hurry to come, but this is just the beginning of a long process and the attractiveness of India as a market for higher education and catchment area for good students will only grow over time.The conflicting perception of what the government move portends is best highlighted by the views of two IIM Ahmedabad directors, the current incumbent sounding pessimistic and the former sounding optimistic on the assumption that the government will now do what needs doing and thereby set the ground for positive results. The pessimism stems from the feeling that the best national institutions will be locked in an unequal combat. They have neither the autonomy to do what needs doing nor the resources to retain the best teachers. In short, Indian institutions need a level playing field to effectively compete with foreign institutions. They must get it. There is a lot of hope in HRD Minister Kapil Sibal allowing extensive functional autonomy, but the issue is, ministers will come and go and an institutional mechanism needs to be put in place to ensure that the politician-bureaucrat nexus does not claw back what it has had to give up at one stage.
The issue of resources can be more difficult to resolve. To get good teachers, the best institutions which already have substantial vacancies, will have to pay better. As the government’s ability to keep footing a rising deficit is limited, higher fees should not lead to some of the brightest youngsters being unable to afford the best education. There are two solutions to this. One, raise fees but increase the scope of assistance and cheap educational loans so that the system becomes more or less means-blind. Two, improve the academic atmosphere, particularly for research, as that, as much as good pay, attracts the best teaching talent. This is squarely in the court of the institutions’ leadership. The IIM-A director also feels that having to live with quotas in intakes places Indian institutions at a disadvantage. Yes and no. The foreign institutions will be no different from domestic private unaided ones, which also do not have to abide by quotas. Besides, it can be argued that quotas do not automatically imply a handicap. The IITs and IIMs have to live down the criticism, made more often against the IIMs, that they produce the best because they take in the best, with little value addition by them. The best teachers are those who create the best out of the second best.

What should a company do when none of its customers understand the term office supplies? How does a coffee brewer sell its primary product to a nation where tea is the national drink? These are some of the questions multi-nationals face when trying to tap into the world’s two largest markets, India and China. Adapting to local tastes is a part of any company’s strategy, but this tends to complicate global logistics. It can be done, but needs close management and can lead to growth and make money. Take Starbucks for example. Since homes in China tend to be small, Starbucks positioned its cafes as an attractive place to spend time between home and work, becoming a critical meeting place and social nexus. In addition, the company focuses very heavily on customer service in China and offers a variety of green tea-based beverages as well as food and other products. But it is not easy to convert consumers. Company employees note that customers come in, buy a cup of coffee, keep the cup and refill it with other brands of coffee through the day. To increase brand visibility and foster more loyalty, Starbucks has engaged in a number of marketing programs in the country, even remaining true to its U.S. image as an advocate of sustainable practices. Experts say that in China, since the current generation is experiencing brands like Starbucks for the first time, they want to experiment, which makes generating loyalty really tough. It is ultimately what happens inside a retail location that will determine what brand a customer chooses. Also, a customer in these countries is more interested in what a product can do, not by the brand name alone. Also, lineage and heritage is important, so brand ambassadors have a strong role to play. Tweaking a brand slightly to adapt it to different countries is something that office supply retailer Staples is very familiar with, according to Lukas Ruecker, the company’s vice president for emerging economies. Ruecker presented a case illustration demonstrating how the company branded itself in both China and India. Instead of trying to stick to the exact product offering they have in other markets, Staples has altered its mix to suit each culture. To market their offerings in China, the company uses catalogs, direct marketing, billboards and other outdoor ads. Staples also tapped into the growing desire for credit among Chinese consumers. A large part of the revenues also come from office furniture and furnishings.
In India, restrictions on FDI in the retail sector make it necessary for multinationals to partner with Indian firms for opening stores in the country. Staples tied up with the Future Group and its product mix leans heavily towards electronics and appliances like printers and computers. The concept of office supplies is alien to the Indian mindset and the name conveyed a meaning of a grocery store, which the company worked hard to overcome.
The picture is yet not clear on how much impact the big box retailers will have on a market largely dominated overwhelmingly by the small ‘mom-and-pop’ stores. Maturity may be as far away as ten to fifteen years, according to some experts.

IIM Ahmedabad CAT 2009 GDPI Shortlisting Criteria IIM Ahmedabad has released its GDPI shortlisting criteria for admission tothe batch 2010-12 using CAT 2009 scores.
Our Institutional Profile stated the following:
“A non-overseas category candidate who does not belong to the SC/ST/DA or NC-OBC
categories should have scored at least 25% in each of the three sections of CAT and at least
33% in aggregate. A non-overseas category candidate who belongs to the NC-OBC category
should have scored at least 20% in each of the three sections of CAT and at least 30% in
aggregate. A non-overseas category candidate who belongs to the SC/ST/DA categories should
have scored at least 17% in each of the three sections of CAT and at least 25% in aggregate.”
In our process, we first selected 71904 General candidates, 11407 NCOBC candidates, 7526 SC
candidates, 1822 ST candidates, and 396 DA candidates who satisfied these criteria. These
candidates were considered for short-listing. Among them, the following candidates have
been shortlisted for Personal Interviews:
General Category candidates: 562 candidates whose percentiles in each section were 96.1
and above, and who had an overall percentile of 99 and had 70% and above in 10th and 12th
Standard were considered for personal interview.
NC-OBC Category Candidates: 200 NC-OBC candidates whose percentiles in each section were
89 and above and who had an overall percentile of 94 were considered for personal interview.
SC Category Candidates: 114 SC candidates whose percentiles in each section were 80 and
above and who had an overall percentile of 85 were considered for personal interview.
ST Category Candidates: 53 ST candidates whose percentiles in each section were 67 and
above and who had an overall percentile of 80 were considered for personal interview.
DA Category Candidates: 31 DA candidates whose percentiles in each section were 67 and
above and who had an overall percentile of 80 were considered for personal interview.
Now most of the exams are done with and my last attempt is the Maharashtra CET.... ive prepared for it... and im using notes and tests from testfunda.com.....these are quite a good set of notes and tests and the counselors are really helpful.... they such kool facilities they answer the doubts within 24 hours and its really explanatory... i dint have to travel in the heat to go to any classes instead i studied on my own.... i got these notes a month before the test and it is really helping as it is a concentrated approach... i am now waiting for the test and hope it gets done with soon....

After the first entrepreneurial generation, family businesses face the challenge of transitioning into professionally managed corporations, with a unique set of problems. In many cases, the descendants want to take over control of the company though they may not be suited to do so. And as generations pass, the number of family shareholders only increases with the holdings getting fragmented. According to statistics, less than 30% of businesses survive the third generation of ownership. However, those that do, have a record of performing better than their corporate counterparts.
Studying the life histories of family run corporations, a few truths emerge. Family run businesses face two primary challenges – achieving business performance and keeping the family committed to the business. For this, some of the things that need to work well include family relationships, ownership structure designed to provide sufficient capital for growth while retaining control of key portions of the business, good governance, a dynamic business portfolio, professional management of the family’s wealth and charitable foundations to promote values across the generations in the family.
There are many reasons for family businesses to go under, such as family conflicts over money, nepotism leading to poor management, infighting and a lack of vision. A clear definition of the family role in the business is essential for the business to grow. There have to be clear boundaries in terms of the decision-making and control of the company’s management. Even the Tatas went through different stages before evolving to the present structure.
In the post-Independence era, JRD Tata, then chairman of the Tata Group, managed his empire by dividing it into virtual fiefdoms with lieutenants like Russi Mody of Tata Steel and Darbari Seth of Tata Tea and Tata Chemicals managing their share of companies almost single-handedly. The structure changed when Ratan Tata, the current Chairman, brought about a shift in the way the group worked, with stronger controls at the centre and professional managers at the head of each group company. To achieve this, he had to wrest control away from the entrenched senior members of the board. The family still retains control at the centre, which effectively helps in strategic decision-making, but the companies themselves are run by professional managers with no day-to-day interference from the family, except where family members themselves work in the company, such as Trent which is headed by Noel Tata.
CEOs are the professional need of any company, and the family has to ensure that no interference takes place at the management level. If possible, a family council should be used to direct the activities of the business(es) to ensure their stake is looked after well, but not to the level of micro-management. A continual agreement is essential to ensure smooth working, and the continued survival and success of the venture.

Statistics released by the US Department of Labor indicate that a further 85,000 jobs were lost in the last month of the year, with employers laying off an unexpectedly higher number and breaking the trend of declining jobless numbers. In fact, November figures which had earlier indicated a loss of 11,000 jobs in the US now show a correction with a gain of 4,000 jobs. The December loss however indicates unemployment remains at a 10% level.
Taking a cue from the figures, the stock markets have also opened the year on a poor note, and may take time to consolidate. Everyone including the policy makers seem to have been taken by surprise at the sudden reversal of fortunes in the employment markets. The report confirmed that while the pace of job market deterioration has declined markedly in recent months, companies remain reluctant to hire, with the result that scarce paychecks will remain a dominant feature of American life for many months.
Across the ‘pond’, on the other side of the Atlantic, the European Union too played catch up with the US on employment figures with the percentage rising to 10 per cent for the first time since 1998 when the Euro was introduced. The rate of unemployment there has been steadily climbing, from 7.5 per cent in November 2008 to its current level of a little over 10 per cent. Latvia at 22.3 per cent and Spain at 19.4 per cent are the worst-affected of the EU countries. In fact, the unemployment rate for under 25s in Spain is currently around 43 per cent. The lowest rates were in the Netherlands, at just 3.9 percent, and Austria, on 5.5 percent.
Within the EU, Germany and Britian are showing signs of having left the recession but other places are still sunk deep. New job creation even in the countries doing well seems to be a distant thought for employers. The only possible ray of sunshine has been an increase in the number of temporary jobs that employers have in the US, where 47,000 positions were added in the month of December. Economists are taking this as a positive sign that companies are willing to invest in manpower in preparation for the coming turnaround, but are not yet ready to commit themselves to full-time employment hires.
The rise in unemployment numbers has put a lot of pressure on the Obama administration, to show how new job creation is happening from the $787 billion bailout package cleared a year ago. American workers have been unemployed an average of 29 weeks in December, the highest ever recorded since the data was tracked from 1948 onwards. Roughly 4 in 10 workers are jobless for over six months.
Economists estimate that the country needs to create at least 100,000 new jobs every month just to keep pace with the number of workers entering the job market. The November figures had indicated a turnaround, which has proved to be only a false hope as the bleak scenario continues. The story is the same in Europe, where economists say the unemployment rates would be even higher had France and Germany not backed programs to reduce number of working hours rather than the number of jobs.

Chirstmas in Mumbai is a wonderful feeling... its pure bliss..today i went all over Mumbai to see what all was happening... marine drive had all its five stars decorated where as every corner in bandra projected the Christmas spirit... all the churches were soo prettily done up.....

Im quite tired of studying things all over again... and thats what i think the problem is with a lot of students honestly after u have studied for CAT u have fair idea of what the portion us like... the only thing u should now do is take papers and then analyze ur performance and study the area where u have made a mistake...

i also purchased one... it was for Rs. 89 and so i thought that i wasnt going wrong in buying one and if it would be helpful ill recoomend it on my blog....
Now i took the test... it was a good one in terms of content and the reports that were shown in the end were worth all the effort...these reports tell u all ur weak areas and helps u concentrate on these sections.
Now that the CAT is done with i really want to concentrate on FMS....The test has been scheduled for January 10, 2010.
