B-schools across the country may be boasting of top class infrastructure and strong industry-academia interface but most of the Tier-II B-schools are struggling on the placements front and manage to achieve placements for only 20-40 per cent of their students.
Besides, the final placement process at these B-schools bags jobs for most of the students in insurance and sales and that too in the salary range of Rs 12000-22000 per month.
The lacklustre performance of these B-schools on the placements front is due to lack of practical sales training, says a research by Little Extra, a Kolkata-based sales training and research institute.
The research was conducted across 60 MBA institutes across the country with the owners, directors, training placement officers and faculty members of these institutes involved in the survey.
The survey also covered the HR heads and chief executive officers of 40 companies across sectors and 800 MBA students.
According to the survey, more than 80 per cent of the students are offered sales jobs but these students are not trained on sales concepts and its applications as the syllabus lacks practical sales training.
The survey states that the MBA/BBA syllabus of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) and Fakir Mohan University, both based out of Orissa and some other MBA institutes do not have practical oriented training.
As per a report by leading global consultancy firm Gartner, various companies spent Rs 1500 crore on sales training for their employees in 2008-09. Though there are many sales trainers for the employers, there are not enough for the management institutes.
To ensure successful sales training at the B-schools, the faculty members must have worked at the managerial level and trained subordinates in sales function.
Sales is about how you talk to your prospect, how you present yourself and not just mention the facts about your product. To sell you need to have confidence in yourself, present your solution enthusiastically”, said Subrato Samddar, director, Little Extra.
Since sales is not just about selling, the research by Little Extra has suggested a two-pronged action- practical sales module and faculties with sales exposure.
Besides, the research has stressed on targeted, customized and holistic employability training focusing on Attitude or Emotional Intelligence (EI). Research says that EI can contribute to 90 per cent of success in life whereas IQ (Intelligence Quotient) contributes only 25 per cent.
The study reports that placements require a combination of corporate interaction through guest lectures and Management Development Programmes as well as employability training but most of the B-schools are deficient in these two aspects.
Apart from placements, the other area of concern is the inability of the second and third rung B-schools to fill up their capacity despite investing Rs 6-15 crore on college infrastructure and start-up costs.
Consequently, these institutes start admitting almost every one who applies, starting a vicious cycle of poor input, leading to poor placements.
The top 50 B-schools in India select just about three per cent of the total aspirants compared to management institutes of international repute like Harvard and Stanford which have a selection rate of 10 per cent.
The inability to attract good students, Samaddar feels is because of the failure to follow the basic rules of marketing like creating a niche brand equity and leveraging word of mouth publicity.
There are more than 1900 B-schools across the country producing over 95,000 management graduates annually.
Little Extra's research suggests that quality dips significantly beyond the top 50 B-schools in all key parameters like student input in communication skills, teaching quality, corporate interaction and final placements.

IIM-B final placements close in just five days
Providing a strong indication of a positive sentiment for the economy, the final placements season at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B) was closed in just five days — half the time the institute took to place students last year. The highlight of the process was that 90 students accepted offers in slot zero (generally the first day) — a 41 per cent increase over the previous year.
Slot zero is the most coveted slot given to recruiters, usually investment banks and consultancies. Over 120 companies came to IIM-B this year for a batch of 270 students. Like last year, banking and financial services companies were at the top of students’ preference, with 27 per cent choosing to work with them. Consulting was the second, with 22 per cent, followed by IT & Systems (20 per cent), marketing (12 per cent) and general management (9 per cent). The rest was accounted for by private equity, healthcare, energy and public-sector units.
IT companies were the surprise package this year. About 50 students accepted offers from these companies. This is understood to be nearly double the number of acceptances last year. Wipro, HCL, MindTree, IBM and Cognizant were among the prominent recruiters. Wipro is said to have made eight offers, while HCL made 5 offers. “After a lull in the sector last year, IT companies have come back with renewed hiring requirements. They have offered good salaries to students in roles like consulting and sales and marketing,” said Sapna Agarwal, head of career development services at IIM-B.
Consulting firm Deloitte made 10 offers, the highest in IIM-B, followed by McKinsey and Boston Consulting Group, who made nine offers each. Some other slot-zero recruiters this year were Bain & Co, Booz & Co, AT Kearney, Diamond Consulting, Alvarez & Marsal, Nomura and Temasek Holdings. P&G, ITC and American Express made six offers each. There were 15 new companies, including healthcare group Narayana Hrudayalaya, which offered senior level positions to six students, on the campus this year. The institute refused to comment on salaries, but it is learnt that there was an increase of 10-20 per cent in average salaries across sectors. Seventy-two students had received pre-placement offers from the companies they interned with.
Lateral placements, for which only students with over 22 months of work experience are eligible, saw a total of 66 offers, compared to 50 offers last year. There were 30 companies in the lateral placements this year.

The CAT test development process was conducted in alignment with the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. The exam was designed with three sections: (1) Verbal Ability, (2) Quantitative Ability, and (3) Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. These three sections are consistent with the knowledge domains historically assessed by the IIM and are also aligned with the content areas covered in equivalent global admission examinations that measure performance along similar scales.
Content of the examination was developed and confirmed by individuals with high levels of expertise in each of three content domains (Verbal, Quantitative, and Data Interpretation). Post-administration analysis was conducted by credentialed psychometricians to confirm the validity of the examination scores and to ensure that every candidate was provided a fair and equal opportunity to display their knowledge.
Step 1: Raw Score is Calculated
Your raw scores are calculated for each section based on the number of questions you answered correctly, incorrectly, or that you omitted.
This scoring methodology ensures that candidates are only awarded points for what they know. Candidates are not awarded inappropriate points for random guessing. This is a standard process in the testing industry and is a methodology employed in scoring similar admissions tests such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Step 2: Raw Score is "Equated"
Equating is a statistical process used to adjust scores on two or more alternate forms of an assessment so that the scores may be used interchangeably. Industry standard processes were used for equating, such as those outlined within the ETS Standards for Quality and Fairness.
Step3: Equated Raw Score is "Scaled"
In order to ensure appropriate interpretation of an equated raw score, the scores must be placed on a common scale or metric. A linear transformation was used for this scaling process, which is an industry standard practice (Kolen & Brennan, 2004).

About Test Difficulty
The CAT exam was developed to accurately identify top performing candidates and that design makes use of a scaled score range of 0-450. In order to appropriately identify the top performing candidates, the CAT exam was, by design, very difficult. As would be expected with the more difficult CAT exam, no candidate answered 100% of the items correctly and no candidate achieved the top theoretical score. The exam design accomplished the goal of identifying the top performing candidates who were, indeed, ranked at the top of the list. If the exam were designed to be substantially easier, it would be theoretically possible for a candidate to achieve a score of 450. However, an exam constructed to be that easy would not serve the distinct purposes of the IIM.

What Ensures The Success Of Business Families?

One of the most common forms of business ownership, family businesses are one of the most overlooked. From the Tatas, Birlas and Ambanis in India to such global giants as Wal-Mart BMW and Samsung, family businesses are present everywhere, from the corner store to multi-billion corporations.
After the first entrepreneurial generation, family businesses face the challenge of transitioning into professionally managed corporations, with a unique set of problems. In many cases, the descendants want to take over control of the company though they may not be suited to do so. And as generations pass, the number of family shareholders only increases with the holdings getting fragmented. According to statistics, less than 30% of businesses survive the third generation of ownership. However, those that do, have a record of performing better than their corporate counterparts.
Studying the life histories of family run corporations, a few truths emerge. Family run businesses face two primary challenges – achieving business performance and keeping the family committed to the business. For this, some of the things that need to work well include family relationships, ownership structure designed to provide sufficient capital for growth while retaining control of key portions of the business, good governance, a dynamic business portfolio, professional management of the family’s wealth and charitable foundations to promote values across the generations in the family.
There are many reasons for family businesses to go under, such as family conflicts over money, nepotism leading to poor management, infighting and a lack of vision. A clear definition of the family role in the business is essential for the business to grow. There have to be clear boundaries in terms of the decision-making and control of the company’s management. Even the Tatas went through different stages before evolving to the present structure.
In the post-Independence era, JRD Tata, then chairman of the Tata Group, managed his empire by dividing it into virtual fiefdoms with lieutenants like Russi Mody of Tata Steel and Darbari Seth of Tata Tea and Tata Chemicals managing their share of companies almost single-handedly. The structure changed when Ratan Tata, the current Chairman, brought about a shift in the way the group worked, with stronger controls at the centre and professional managers at the head of each group company. To achieve this, he had to wrest control away from the entrenched senior members of the board. The family still retains control at the centre, which effectively helps in strategic decision-making, but the companies themselves are run by professional managers with no day-to-day interference from the family, except where family members themselves work in the company, such as Trent which is headed by Noel Tata.
CEOs are the professional need of any company, and the family has to ensure that no interference takes place at the management level. If possible, a family council should be used to direct the activities of the business(es) to ensure their stake is looked after well, but not to the level of micro-management. A continual agreement is essential to ensure smooth working, and the continued survival and success of the venture.

Math games...
Im so excited t ohave found this new game where in i can play and practise my maths... quants has always been my weak area and i have found new innovative ways to concentrate and work on the math secction...
I really like the quizzes and now im addicted to the games i found on the site...
its called number tetris its a really cool game where one can play and sharpen their mathematical skills...there are various rounds which concentrate on multiplication division... and u need to be fast else u will loose...
Im so glad i found these games on testfunda.com coz now i look at all these numbers and i dont get scared... earlier the more no.s i saw the more scared id get of the sum and end up making stupid silly mistakes..

The CAT aftermath!!!
Ok CAT has passed and all i need is a vacation..... life is good now...but wont call it great..
tomorrow i start with FMS preparation...
not looking forward to it though...
i dnnw y it so feels that it wont be that good an idea to not study today... considering my cat wasnt that great... i mean it was good quant wasn't as disastrous as i expected it to be....
but still FMS is something which i was lookin forwrd to now....
havent any idea about how to start but ill surely put up some updates about FMS soon...

There is no prescribed syllabus or format for this multiple choice 2-hour admission test. The previous admission tests usually comprised the following basic areas:
1. Quantitative ability
2. Verbal ability
3. English comprehension
4. Analytical ability & Logical Reasoning
There are two ways you can apply for FMS programmes: Physical Form or Online Application.

CAT 2009 arrives!
Okay here i am this is me there is no where on earth i can be here i am just cat n me....lalalllllaaaa...
the exam is here im losing my mind went back to my guide... google here i come.... and i found this article which really helped me.... im personally taking my CAT on the 6th of Dec...
Tutorial (optional): Duration - 15 minutes.
We suggest, you should go through the tutorial once, even if you have seen it before.
Test Duration:
The actual duration of the test is 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Sections covered:
Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning; not necessarily in that order.
Test Format and pattern:
Reports suggest a total of 60 questions with 20 from each section. The pattern is similar to previous CAT papers.
Negative Marking:
Though not mentioned on the day of the exam, the IIM DEMO player does state that “Wrong answer carries negative point. Therefore it is to your advantage to answer every question correctly. If you are unsure of your answer, you can MARK the question for review if time permits”
However, the marks per question & the actual negative marking is not known hence it is futile to speculate about the cut-offs.
Highlighting Text:
You can highlight text in group questions like RCs. You can make multiple highlights in a particular screen, which gets deleted once you switch to the next screen.
Reviewing Questions:
You can mark a question to come back to it later. You can then Review either all the questions or review only the marked questions or review only the incomplete questions. The review shows a list of all the questions, but it will not directly give you a count of the questions attempted or to be attempted. You will need to manually count the number of questions for such data.
Items provided for rough work:
Pencils, eraser and a paper booklet of 4 A4 size papers will be provided. You will not be allowed to take your own stationary into the computer lab. In case of broken or blunt pencil points, your pencil will be replaced immediately.
Ending the test:
If you click the END button at the bottom of the screen, you are immediately logged out of the test. There is no popup box asking you whether you are sure about quitting the test. This button is very close to the NEXT button. Hence, while giving the test DO NOT click on the End button at any point of time.
Timer:
The timer is present on the screen at all time and shows the time remaining till the end of the test. Wrist watches are not allowed into the computer lab. At the end of the test, when your time runs out, you will be automatically logged out of the test and a screen with “You have run out of time” text will be visible.

CAT 2009 – Exam Analysis
To put you minds at ease and answer all your queries about the CBT CAT 2009, here is a short writeup which enumerates the various points that you need to keep in mind while attempting the exam.Tutorial (optional): Duration - 15 minutes.
We suggest, you should go through the tutorial once, even if you have seen it before.
Test Duration:
The actual duration of the test is 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Sections covered:
Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning; not necessarily in that order.
Test Format and pattern:
Reports suggest a total of 60 questions with 20 from each section. The pattern is similar to previous CAT papers.
Negative Marking:
Though not mentioned on the day of the exam, the IIM DEMO player does state that “Wrong answer carries negative point. Therefore it is to your advantage to answer every question correctly. If you are unsure of your answer, you can MARK the question for review if time permits”
However, the marks per question & the actual negative marking is not known hence it is futile to speculate about the cut-offs.
Highlighting Text:
You can highlight text in group questions like RCs. You can make multiple highlights in a particular screen, which gets deleted once you switch to the next screen.
Reviewing Questions:
You can mark a question to come back to it later. You can then Review either all the questions or review only the marked questions or review only the incomplete questions. The review shows a list of all the questions, but it will not directly give you a count of the questions attempted or to be attempted. You will need to manually count the number of questions for such data.
Items provided for rough work:
Pencils, eraser and a paper booklet of 4 A4 size papers will be provided. You will not be allowed to take your own stationary into the computer lab. In case of broken or blunt pencil points, your pencil will be replaced immediately.
Ending the test:
If you click the END button at the bottom of the screen, you are immediately logged out of the test. There is no popup box asking you whether you are sure about quitting the test. This button is very close to the NEXT button. Hence, while giving the test DO NOT click on the End button at any point of time.
Timer:
The timer is present on the screen at all time and shows the time remaining till the end of the test. Wrist watches are not allowed into the computer lab. At the end of the test, when your time runs out, you will be automatically logged out of the test and a screen with “You have run out of time” text will be visible.

WHAT WE DO KNOW
- Prometric has extended the deadline for editing details till Dec 11.
- Biometrics Testing includes your photo being taken by a PC camera and an electronic finger printing (left and right hand index finger 3-3 times).
- Voucher Admit card printout and Photo ID are required to give the test. If you have lost either, call on the Prometric helpline immediately. Voucher number is required to login. The confirmation email need not be printed in the admit card. Only the admit card summary is important.
- Having different addresses in the admit card and in the photo-id won’t deter you from giving the test. To be on the safe side, if such a case rises, take your electricity or telephone bill with you.
- You do not require the Prometric username and password to give the test.
- The password required to login to the test will be given by Prometric volunteers at the start of the test.
- For doing rough work, pencil, eraser and a booklet having 4 A4 sizes papers (8 sides) are provided. No sharpners are provided. They just change your pencils.
- Skipping the 15 minutes tutorial won’t grant extra time for the test. It is advisable to go through the tutorial anyway.
- System is user-friendly.
- Changing resolution of the screen (zooming) is not possible.
- Exiting the test software or opening another application like Notepad of MS Word is not possible.
- Cntrl + F is disabled. So finding a word in RC using the same is not possible.
- Duration of the test won’t keep one down.
- Negative marking exists.
- You can start from any section of your choice.
- To clear the clicked option, re-click on the same to deselect the option.
- The END button is very close to the NEXT button. Be extra careful. You don’t want to ruin a year.
- We can jump between questions by using the Review feature (as shown in the CAT demo Player)
- Highlighting multiple lines in an RC section is possible. However, the selection is lost if we move away from the section.
- Time left is displayed on screen. Timer logs you out automatically at the end of the test.
- You wouldn’t get a score-sheet immediately after the exam is over. The results will be announced on 22-Jan-2010
- Make sure to file an official complaint with the Prometric ‘proctors’ if you find issues with the technology (any technical glitches) while giving the test.
- As marking system is unknown, the only strategy in hand is to attempt as many questions as possible without compromising on accuracy.
- Students claim that the level of difficulty of CAT was not as high as expected. Hence attempting more questions correctly will give you an edge.
- Reports say that attempting 45+ questions (spread out equally across the three sections) with a 80-85+ accuracy seems to be a good bet.
- It is recommended that a break up of 40 minutes for Verbal, 45 minutes for Quant and 50 minutes for DI LR is optimum.
- Students expecting higher scores suggest that 13-15 Qs in VA, 11-13 in QA and 10-12 in DI would help you get a good score.

The CAT and its Player...
The CAT is a few days away and the test has a new avtar to it... its no longer a paper based test where we could mark our answers on paper.... ive attended many seminars conducted by CAT preparation leaders... some class room coaching institutes and online portals... but always had some doubts about the new format.... so as usual i fell back on google ive been looking for the CAT official player if anybody knows about it please let me know... if i find it ill put the link up here for u guys....

Time to take papers....
Im soo tired of studying.... life seems crazy now... studying and practising... cant get myself to doing anything except CAT preparation..... need a break away from studies but everytime i think i should probably not pick my books up today...I end up feeling so guilty about not doing something fruitful that day....ive decided that when im exhausted i would probably go through papers and research on prep material on various online addas... i was surfing a few sites and came across this article its actually a paper and tried to give it seems like it was a good idea coz im feeling so confident now...

CAT 2009: How to manage your time

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is the first evaluation in being admitted to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other affiliated colleges. Assuming that the CAT 2009 will be held in December 2009, over a period of 10 days, there are roughly seven months left to prepare well for it.
There are two primary reasons to do well:
1. If you get GD calls, your CAT score will still be an important parameter on which the final admission will be based.
2. If you don't do well, it might, unfortunately, be the last evaluation -- you will not get GD / PI calls from the institute of your choice.
However, I think seven months are sufficient to prepare well for the test. In fact, most students I know who did well, didn't prepare much more than six to eight months.
The sections in the CAT paper -- Verbal, Quantitative, Logic / Data Interpretation -- each are aimed at testing how well a candidate can apply skills that are extremely important in daily life first and management thereafter.
I would roughly divide the months till the CAT, into two parts -- time uptil August and the 15 weeks after that. This division is not rigid and the actual preparation pattern changes slowly from person to person. This division is especially helpful for the Verbal section.
The first part should be devoted not only to the CAT but also to generally prepare to get into B-schools. The effort during these months, which one might not explicitly direct at the CAT, in fact does help in many subtle ways for the exam as well.
The last 15 weeks or so should be aimed at intensively preparing for the CAT. Most students who appear for CAT do so while managing their day jobs, education etc. Hence, intensive preparation for too long (while managing a hectic schedule) can be tiring and can take the fun out of the process.
Bottomline: it is better to have a different approach to the exam in each of these time frames.
Quantitative Ability
Most students are pretty quick with numbers due to numerous exams that would have taken till Class XII. However, the 3-4 years of graduation and the job thereafter are littered with electronic devices that hamper the speed of mental calculation.
Having said that, in the second half of prep, practice is of utmost importance. Decide on some material and aim to be thorough with it. This material should cover all the important topics from CBT CAT point of view. At most 10 per cent of the questions might require an original approach and exceptional ability. It is often prudent to not attempt these questions.
Except for these, most questions in a CBT CAT paper will be similar to questions you can find in the material for TestFunda courseware. Hence, it is important that you attempt all the questions and know the approach to the questions you couldn't answer correctly earlier. In case you are not sure, you could resort to the intergrated 'ask-a-doubt' o the website and get your query resolved within one-working day.
Now, no matter how much you prepare for the CBT CAT, my experience suggests that there are some of us who are exceptional in mathematical ability and the rest of us who can't overcome it. Instead of fidgeting no end over this, I think it is practical to do one's best and do better in the other sections.
Logical Reasoning / Data Interpretation
This section typically is made up of 5-6 sets of questions. Each set is related to a central idea or theme. While the entire section might seem unstructured, the key to solving a problem in fact is identifying the structure and the theme of a question. By structure, I mean, the best framework to represent the data given in a set. This structure might be in the form of tables or trees etc. Once the structure to a question has been identified, the next step is inferring more data from the given (now structured) data.
A lot of puzzles are available which essentially hinge on the ability to find a structure to the problem. In these questions once the structure is identified then the inference is obvious. There is no algorithmic procedure to arrive at a structure of a completely new problem. But solving more of these puzzles certainly helps a person gain an understanding of the structuring involved. The 'Puzzle of the week' (http://testfunda.com/ExamPrep/MBA-Resource/RL/Learning-Resources) is a good place to start. The puzzles might be harder or easier than those asked in CAT, but they will prove to be an excellent learning tool.
Many questions, such as Venn Diagrams, reading tables, are already structured. In order to improve on the inferring of new data, I would recommend puzzles like the Sudoku or the Kakuro. These have information in a structured format but inferring difficulty varies. Sorting through the available information and inferring more data quickly is critical. Since, there is very little theoretical aspect to this section, one needs to extensively practice various questions to improve speed and accuracy.
Verbal Ability
The best use of one's time till August needs to be made for this section. It is observed that people who habitually read a lot do well in this section. I think that the first two months should be devoted exclusively to reading a lot of articles in English.
This has the following advantages:
i. It is critical that a person be able to read the passages quickly. Hence s/he has to be in the habit of reading long articles.
ii. Most of the vocabulary is learnt by the way of usage in sentences.
iii. A person needs to understand not only the given text but also what is likely to be leading up to it and what will follow.
iv. In the new CBT format, you need to be comfortable with reading online.
You should prepare yourself in the first few months to read extensive opinionated / argumentative articles from good sources. These sources are typically British magazines and the like. Not only should you read them fast, but also understand how the writer structures the article and reaches a conclusion. A few people reading the same article independent of each other and later discussing what the article was trying to convey, helps a lot.
The passages in the CAT are typically excerpts of such articles. In these months, it is a bonus if you can finish a standard set of word lists (used for exams like GRE etc) Planned and sincere study during this time will take you far in improving your Verbal section score. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of reading online. Form a habit of reading a lot of articles from online versions of newspapers. You can keep abreast of current affairs and a whole host of other happenings at http://testfunda.com/ExamPrep/MBA-Resource/RL/CURRENT-AFFAIRS
In the last 15 weeks or so, you should diligently solve a lot of questions. In passages, often two answers seem very close. The knack of picking one of them comes from answering questions and understanding the explanation with the answers.
To conclude, I think in the coming three months read a lot of good argumentative English (Verbal), improve your speed (Quantitative) and attempt as many different puzzles (Logic) as you can. Starting September, practicing questions will hold the key in each section.

Quantitative Ability: Its a war!!!

A very commonly asked question is about the relative importance given to different topics in the QA section of the CAT. The unpredictability of the CAT has been one of the reasons that make it difficult to bell.
The following chart shows us how much percent of the QA section of CAT 2004 to CAT 2008 was Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Modern Maths.
Apart from the reducing importance of Arithmetic, no clear pattern emerges from this. More importantly, no topics can be completely ignored for your preparation.
Going into greater detail, it is possible to identify the concepts that are most important in CAT - going by the number of times that they have appeared from 2004 onwards.
Number Theory accounted for almost 26% of the 127 quant questions. Circles and Functions followed with 18% and 12% respectively.
Here is the complete list of concepts that appeared in these five years, along with the percentage of questions from that topic.

NOTE: A question that requires the application of more than one concept has been counted only once, under the central, primary concept area being tested. For instance, a question classified under the Number Theory concept could also require basic knowledge and application of percentages, averages and quadratic equations, but we count it only once, under the concept Number Theory. Or a functions question could test your knowledge of higher order algebraic equations or set theory.
Let's discuss the most important concepts:
Number Theory
Number Theory questions usually are based on classification of numbers (even-odd, prime-composite), HCF, LCM, divisibility, reversal of numbers, factorials, squares, cubes and base conversions.
Many of these questions can be solved by testing different sets of numbers to satisfy conditions or by plugging in values in options. Some others can be easily solved if you know divisibility rules for numbers like 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 16 etc.
Having knowledge of the Fundamental Principle of Counting, applications of the Binomial theorem to divisibility problems and notations of Set theory will definitely help.
Remember that on the difficulty scale these questions rank very low, but practice alone can make you comfortable with these questions. Use the Skill Builder and the huge resource (72 questions) of Past CAT Questions in Number Systems and Number Theory for gaining confidence that you can handle this concept.
Circles
Here you need to apply basic formulae like area of circles, triangles, Pythagoras theorem, mid-point theorem and know the definitions and properties of tangents, chords and arcs. As mentioned earlier, there may be sub-concepts in a Circles question. Basics of geometry, triangles, coordinate geometry, and arithmetic and geometric progressions very often feature in these questions. More often than not, a fair amount of visualisation is important.
There are only a few fundamentals to master in plane geometry, but an endless variety of questions. CBSE/NCERT textbooks of standards VIII, IX and X are a great place to learn the basics and past CAT questions a great place to apply them.
Functions
This is probably the most feared concept. You should know how functions are represented analytically (algebraically) and graphically. Number theory, algebraic equations, inequalities and co-ordinate geometry are concepts that are generally required to answer these questions.
Functions have an uncanny knack of appearing difficult when they are absolutely not. Do not decide whether to attempt a Functions question based on how it appears at the first glance.
Time and Distance
Time × Speed = Distance
We learn this in the third standard. The faster you run, the faster you reach. The slower you run, more is the time you take to reach. If two trains run towards each other, they collide with each other faster than they would, if one was stationary and the other running. This is common sense, right? Well this is what Time and Distance questions in CAT are all about.
You need to understand the concept of relative speed very well. You should know what average speed means and if you understand variation well, Time and Distance questions will be a cakewalk for you.
Permutations and Combinations
This is one topic where most students falter, partly because it is generally taught in classes XI and XII, after which it is not really used, and partly because students have a preconception that this is a very tough topic. Well, Permutations and Combinations can be rated as the most entertaining concept, if you get the hang of it.
You can start with simple applications of the Fundamental Principle of counting, which you will find in any good text book and slowly graduate to solving relatively complex questions on permutations and combinations. Past CAT questions will give you an idea of what kind of questions you can expect in the exam.
Do not take the risk of neglecting this concept. As mentioned earlier, this concept is very frequently useful in Number Theory.
Sequences, Progressions and Series
This concept covers mainly two types of questions. One involves identifying sequences of numbers that do not follow any predefined patterns using logic and the other involves use of arithmetic, geometric and harmonic progressions. The application of this concept also features in Functions, Geometry, Number Theory, and Time and Distance.
As you go through the Past CAT questions you will see that there is hardly any topic that is completely absent. A single question may need an understanding of 3-4 different concepts. Therefore, not knowing one concept may put you at the risk of losing out on the choice of attempting a number of questions.
Hence, it is important to get the basics right across the concepts, and then focus on the ones that you know are important.
If you keep practicing new examples, you will master all fundamentals easily. The best way to learn is by doing, rather than learning by rote.

Ive noticed something.... recently a few of my frends were a little lost about where we would be one year from now and we were kinda blank..... its good to be positive and say IIM but are all capable of getting into this premier institute of management India has.... its good to be positive but with the we need to put in that kind of hard work..... im an optimistic person but im also practical...its always good to have a plan B.... i searched extensively but marketing depts. of many institutes are working overtime to promote their institutes.........
found an article which lists the prominent B schools... these are not ranked........its genuine and is by business india..
according to the State u belong to; u can find out if u would want to choose from any of these institute..(remeber its plan B so aim high)
